01Winter Car Storage Hertfordshire

Winter storage is part of the car’s maintenance

Winter car storage in Hertfordshire is not simply about putting a car indoors until spring. It is about protecting the car through the months when cold, damp, road salt and long periods of inactivity can affect its condition.

Equerry 55 operates from a private indoor unit on a gated estate in Essex. Humidity is managed to a target of fifty five percent relative humidity, winter temperature to around ten to twelve degrees Celsius, and every car goes on battery conditioning the day it arrives.

“In the beginning I looked around and could not find quite the car I dreamed of, so I decided to build it myself.
— Ferry Porsche

Same reason this exists. Nowhere kept cars the way we wanted our own kept, so we built it.

05Cars we store

Cars that come off the road for the winter

Equerry 55 stores classic cars, modern classics, prestige cars, performance cars, supercars, collector cars and low mileage vehicles.

Winter storage is suitable for any car that will spend several months off the road and needs a controlled indoor environment rather than being left outside or in an unsuitable garage.

The plan is chosen around the car, the length of stay and the level of care required.

06Who the service is for

When Winter Car Storage Hertfordshire makes sense

Winter lay up

If a car will spend several months off the road, controlled indoor storage reduces its exposure to cold, damp, road salt and long periods of inactivity.

No garage, or the wrong one

A driveway, a carport, or an outbuilding that runs colder and damper than the air outside it.

Away for the winter

Somewhere warmer until spring, or working abroad. The car is looked after rather than left on a drive at an empty house.

Road salt season

Once salt goes down, every run leaves it in the arches and under the sills. The simplest answer is not to be on those roads.

Building work over winter

Trades, vans, grit and dust, and a lot of people who were not there last week. Move the car out before the work starts.

A spring sale or auction

Kept through the quiet months, then prepared, photographed and shown when the market wakes up again.

One car too many for winter

The summer car goes away and the driveway goes back to the everyday one, without taking on a second garage.

A restoration between stages

Somewhere dry over the winter, rather than a corner of a workshop or a barn while a specialist waits on parts.

Bought in the autumn

A car bought at the end of the season and not worth putting on salted roads before you have even enjoyed it.

09What winter does to a car

What winter does to a standing car

A car does not stop ageing because nobody is driving it. These are the six things a winter outside actually does.

Road salt already on the car

Salt does not stop working because the car is indoors. It sits in the wheel arches, along the sills and on the underside through the whole winter. A wash before check in can be arranged here.

Condensation on cold metal

Cold night, warmer day, moist air. Water forms on the coldest metal, which is inside the sills, the box sections and the boot floor. Controlled humidity and a stable winter temperature limit the conditions that cause it.

A battery left to go flat

Five months is long enough for a healthy battery to become a dead one, and on a modern car a full discharge can lose stored settings as well. Every car goes on conditioning the day it arrives.

Tyres standing in one place

Tyres deform where they sit and a cold floor does not help. Pressures are recorded at check in and checked monthly on The Keep, which also includes TyreDox support to help reduce flat spotting risk.

Brakes left clamped

Pads can bond to discs and shoes to drums over a long stand, particularly in damp air. On The Keep the engine is run to operating temperature every sixty days and brake binding is checked at the same time.

Fuel sitting all winter

Petrol containing ethanol can take up water, and older fuel systems are less tolerant of it than modern ones. The right approach depends on the car and the length of the stay, so fuel is agreed with you at check in.

The Stable holds the environment, the battery and the cover, which covers most of what a winter throws at a car. The Keep adds the scheduled checks and the engine runs, which is what a car standing five months actually benefits from.

It is close enough that a Hertfordshire owner can reasonably drive in, see the space and drive out again in a morning, which is worth doing before leaving a car anywhere.

We serve owners across St Albans, Harpenden, Radlett, Berkhamsted, Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Hertford, Ware, Bishop’s Stortford, Hitchin and Welwyn.

“Small things make perfection, but perfection is no small thing.

Batteries sulphate. Tyres flat-spot. Fluids draw water and brakes bind. None of it is dramatic and all of it is expensive.

14Winter Car Storage Hertfordshire questions

Winter Car Storage Hertfordshire FAQs

How much does winter car storage cost?

The Stable is £250 plus VAT per month. The Keep is £350 plus VAT per month. Both carry a minimum charge equivalent to three months, which covers most of a normal winter lay up.

How far is the facility from Hertfordshire?

The building is in Essex, reached from Hertfordshire on the M25 eastbound or across on the A414 and down the M11. From St Albans it is around an hour on a normal day, and less from the eastern side of the county. Collection and return delivery can be arranged both ways.

When should the car come in, and when does it go back?

A car can be brought into storage before winter conditions begin and returned in spring or on another agreed date. The storage dates are agreed with you and are not fixed by us.

Can I book for the winter only?

Yes. Winter only storage is available. The minimum term and minimum charge are three months. Collection and return delivery can also be arranged if required.

Should the car be washed before it goes in?

It is worth doing. Road salt left on a car does not stop working once the car is indoors, and it collects in the wheel arches, under the sills and on the underside where you cannot see it. A wash before check in can be arranged here if you would rather not do it yourself.

What happens to the battery over the winter?

Every car goes on battery conditioning the day it arrives. A battery left flat through a winter often does not recover, and on a modern car a full discharge can also lose stored settings. On The Keep the conditioner status is checked weekly.

Can you collect a car from Hertfordshire before winter?

Yes. Collection and return delivery can be arranged from your home, garage, dealer or specialist in and around Hertfordshire, at a time agreed in advance. Covered transport can be arranged where required or preferred. Return delivery can be arranged for spring or another agreed date.

What conditions is the car kept in?

Humidity is managed to a target of fifty five percent relative humidity, with winter temperature held around ten to twelve degrees Celsius. Every car is under a breathable indoor cover, in a private indoor unit rather than in an unheated garage or outbuilding.

Will the tyres flat spot over a winter?

Tyres deform where they sit, and a stiff sidewall on a cold floor is the worst case. Pressures are recorded at check in and checked monthly on The Keep, which also includes TyreDox support to help reduce flat spotting risk.

Does the car need insurance over the winter?

Yes. The owner keeps comprehensive insurance for the vehicle’s full market value throughout storage. Most classic and prestige insurers offer a laid up or storage rate for a car that is off the road. Confirm the position with your insurer before the car comes in.

Can I visit the car during the winter?

Yes. Access is available by private appointment arranged in advance.

Should I SORN the car while it is stored?

That is your decision and the DVLA rules are theirs, not ours. A SORN vehicle may only be used on a public road to or from a pre booked test appointment, so if the car is declared off road it cannot be road tested during its stay. Tell us either way at check in.

Do you start the engine over the winter?

On The Keep, the engine is run up to full operating temperature every sixty days and brake binding is checked at the same time. On The Stable the car is kept, monitored and protected, without scheduled running.

Can the car be ready to drive when I collect it in spring?

Yes. Recommissioning after a winter, servicing, MOT work, detailing and paint care can all be arranged through one contact and are quoted and agreed before anything is booked. Book it when you book the return and the car goes home ready to use.
