Long Term Car Storage Oxford
Humidity controlled indoor storage for cars owned in and around Oxford. The private indoor facility is in Essex, with collection and return delivery arranged and plans from £250 plus VAT per month.

A long stand is what ages a car
Long term car storage in Oxford is not simply a parking space rented by the month. A car that stands for six months or more is affected by damp, by a discharged battery, by tyres and brakes left in one position and by fluids that sit still, none of which are about mileage.
Equerry 55 operates from a private indoor unit on a gated estate in Essex. Humidity is managed to a target of fifty five percent relative humidity, every car goes on battery conditioning the day it arrives, and scheduled checks are carried out according to the chosen storage plan.
What every car gets however long it stays
Every car gets the same base level of indoor care from the day it arrives, whichever plan it is on and however long the stay.

“In the beginning I looked around and could not find quite the car I dreamed of, so I decided to build it myself.”
Same reason this exists. Nowhere kept cars the way we wanted our own kept, so we built it.

Cars that stand for months or years
Equerry 55 stores classic cars, modern classics, prestige cars, performance cars, supercars, collector cars and any car that matters to its owner. It does not need to be rare or expensive. If the car has value or meaning to you and will be off the road for months, it is worth storing properly.
Long term storage suits any car that will be off the road for six months or more, including cars held as part of a collection, cars between restoration stages and cars whose owner is not in the country.
The plan is chosen around the car, the length of stay and the level of care required.
When Long Term Car Storage Oxford makes sense
Working abroad
A posting, a contract or a move overseas. The car is kept and looked after rather than left on a drive at an empty house.
A car that is not being used
Not sold, not driven, and not improving in a garage that runs colder and damper than the air outside it.
A collection with no room left
More space without taking on another building, another lease or another set of keys to worry about.
Between restoration stages
Somewhere controlled while a specialist waits on parts, rather than a corner of a workshop or a barn.
A move or a long build
Trades, vans, dust and people who were not there last week. Move the car out before the work starts and bring it back when it is done.
Holding for the right market
Kept properly until the moment to sell arrives, then prepared, photographed and shown rather than explained away.
Probate and inherited cars
A car that needs keeping safely while decisions are made, valuations are done and paperwork moves at its own pace.
A non runner
Loaded and unloaded on covered transport and pushed into place. No MOT and no tax is not a problem for a car that is not on the road.
A car you want to keep
If the car matters to you but you do not expect to use it for months, long term storage keeps it protected until you are ready for it again.

“The best Ferrari ever built is the next one.”
Fifty five percent relative humidity. Ten to twelve degrees through winter. Checked on a schedule and written down, so the next car is kept better than the last.

What time does to a standing car
A car does not stop ageing because nobody is driving it. These are the six things a long stand actually does.
Damp working on a car that never moves
A car that is driven dries itself out. A car that stands does not. Damp air settles into the sills, the box sections and the boot floor and stays there. Humidity is managed to a target of fifty five percent relative humidity.
A battery through a long stand
Months is long enough for a healthy battery to become a dead one, and on a modern car a full discharge can lose stored settings as well. Every car goes on conditioning the day it arrives.
Tyres standing in one place
Tyres deform where they sit, and the longer the stand the more likely the flat spot is to stay. Pressures are recorded at check in and checked monthly on The Keep, which also includes TyreDox support.
Brakes left clamped
Pads can bond to discs and shoes to drums over a long stand, particularly in damp air. On The Keep the engine is run to operating temperature every sixty days and brake binding is checked at the same time.
Fuel and fluids sitting still
Petrol containing ethanol can take up water and brake fluid is hygroscopic. Older systems tolerate both less well. What to do depends on the car and the length of stay, so it is agreed at check in.
Seals, hoses and trim drying out
Rubber hardens and leather dries where the air is too dry, and mould finds it where the air is too wet. A stable environment under a breathable cover is what keeps a car between the two.
The Stable holds the environment, the battery and the cover, which covers most of what time throws at a standing car. The Keep adds the scheduled checks and the engine runs, which is what a car standing six months or more actually benefits from.

Long Term Car Storage Oxford FAQs
How much does long term car storage cost?
The Stable is £250 plus VAT per month. The Keep is £350 plus VAT per month. Both carry a minimum charge equivalent to three months. There is no separate long stay rate. Storage continues at the applicable monthly rate.
How far is the facility from Oxford?
The building is in Essex, reached from Oxford on the M40 and round the top of the M25. It is roughly ninety miles, or around two hours on a normal day. Collection and return delivery can be arranged both ways.
What counts as long term storage?
In practice, anything from six months upwards. The minimum term is three months, but a car that will stand for half a year or more is a different job from a short stay, because time is what does the damage rather than mileage.
Does the storage have to have an end date?
No. Long term storage can continue for as long as required, with the return arranged when you are ready. If the plan changes, the dates change with it.
What conditions is the car kept in?
Humidity is managed to a target of fifty five percent relative humidity, with winter temperature held around ten to twelve degrees Celsius. Every car is under a breathable indoor cover, in a humidity controlled indoor unit rather than an unheated garage, a barn or a container.
What happens to the battery over a long stand?
Every car goes on battery conditioning the day it arrives. A battery left flat for months rarely recovers, and on a modern car a full discharge can also lose stored settings. On The Keep the conditioner status is checked weekly.
Can you collect a car from Oxford?
Yes. Collection and return delivery can be arranged from your home, garage, dealer or specialist in and around Oxford, at a time agreed in advance. Covered transport is available where required or preferred, and is usually the sensible choice for a car that has already been standing.
Will the tyres flat spot over a long stay?
Tyres deform where they sit, and the longer the stand the more likely it is to stay. Pressures are recorded at check in and checked monthly on The Keep, which also includes TyreDox support to help reduce flat spotting risk.
What about fuel and fluids over a long period?
Petrol containing ethanol can take up water, and older fuel systems tolerate it less well than modern ones. Brake fluid is also hygroscopic. The right approach depends on the car and the length of the stay, so both are agreed with you at check in rather than assumed.
Is the engine run while the car is stored?
On The Keep, the engine is run up to full operating temperature every sixty days and brake binding is checked at the same time. On The Stable the car is kept, protected and covered, without scheduled running. Scheduled checks are carried out according to the chosen storage plan.
Does the car need insurance while it is in long term storage?
Yes. The owner keeps comprehensive insurance for the vehicle’s full market value throughout storage. Check with your insurer whether a laid up or storage policy is available. Confirm the position with your insurer before the car comes in.
Can I visit the car during a long stay?
Yes. Access is available by private appointment arranged in advance, whether the car is staying three months or three years.
Should I SORN the car for a long stay?
That is entirely your decision, and the DVLA rules are theirs rather than ours. Equerry 55 does not make or manage a SORN declaration on your behalf. If you do declare the car off road, note that it may then only be used on a public road to or from a pre booked test appointment, so it cannot be road tested during its stay. Tell us either way at check in.
Can you store a car that does not run, or has no MOT or tax?
Yes, by prior agreement. A non runner is loaded and unloaded on covered transport and pushed into place. Cars without MOT or tax are accepted because a stored car is not being driven on a public road.
Can the car be ready to drive when I want it back?
Yes. Recommissioning after a long stand, servicing, MOT work, detailing and paint care can all be arranged through one contact and are quoted and agreed before anything is booked. Book it when you book the return and the car goes home ready to use.
A car that needs keeping properly?
Tell us about the car, its current location and how long you expect to need storage.
Equerry 55 will confirm availability and explain the storage and transport options.
