Storage is part of the car’s maintenance

Storage is part of the car’s maintenance. A classic car does not stop ageing because the mileage stops increasing.

Proper classic car storage in Surrey is not simply about putting the car indoors. It is about controlling what happens to it while it stands.

Equerry 55 holds fifty five percent relative humidity and ten to twelve degrees Celsius through winter, at a private indoor site in Essex. Every car is photographed, logged and put on battery conditioning from the day it arrives.

Why it exists
“In the beginning I looked around and could not find quite the car I dreamed of, so I decided to build it myself.
— Ferry Porsche

Same reason this exists. Nowhere kept cars the way we wanted our own kept, so we built it.

05Cars we store

Classic cars worth preserving

We store classic cars because they matter to their owners, not because they fit a particular age, badge or value bracket. That might be an air cooled Porsche, a classic Ferrari, a modern classic, a restoration project, a car inherited from family, or simply a car you intend to keep for many years. If it is worth preserving to you, it is worth storing properly.

Some cars are part of private collections. Others are the one car somebody has owned for decades. Some are concours examples, some are projects, and some are simply difficult to replace. The storage plan is chosen around the car, its condition and the length of its stay.

06Who the service is for

When Classic Car Storage Surrey makes sense

Winter, October to April

The months a classic should not be near road salt, standing water or a cold damp garage. The most common reason a car arrives here.

A car that barely gets used

Owned for years, driven a few times a season. Standing still is what is wearing it out, not mileage.

Time abroad

Several months away a year, or a second home elsewhere. The car stays cared for rather than just parked.

No garage that suits it

A garage that is damp, an outbuilding that is colder than the air, or a driveway that was never right for the car.

Building work at home

Grit and dust get into everything. Get the car out before the work starts rather than after.

Selling or going to auction

Kept, prepared, photographed and shown from one place while the sale is arranged.

A collection outgrowing the house

Add space for the next car without a second lease or a second set of keys to worry about.

Inherited or newly bought

A car that needs assessing and keeping somewhere safe before any decision is made about it.

Restoration in progress

Somewhere dry between stages, or while a specialist waits for parts, instead of a corner of a workshop.

09What storage protects against

What proper classic car storage protects against

A classic car can deteriorate while standing still. Proper storage is about managing the conditions that cause that deterioration, including humidity, temperature, battery condition, tyres, fluids and mechanical components.

Condensation inside the structure

Cold night, warmer day, moist air. Water forms on the coldest metal, which is inside the sills, the box sections, the boot floor and the exhaust. Maintaining controlled relative humidity significantly reduces the conditions that encourage condensation and corrosion.

Brake and clutch fluid

Conventional fluid is hygroscopic. It pulls water out of the air through the system, and that water sits in the cylinders and calipers corroding them from the inside while the car does nothing.

Ethanol in modern petrol

E10 draws in water and is hard on the older rubber, cork and alloy that a pre nineteen ninety fuel system is built from. Left in a tank over a winter it is a known cause of blocked jets and perished hoses.

Battery sulphation

A flat battery left flat is a dead battery within weeks. Conditioning from day one costs nothing. Replacing a battery and chasing the electrical faults a dead one causes does not.

Flat spots and perished rubber

Tyres deform where they sit and old rubber cracks from the sidewall in. Pressures are logged at check in and TyreDox support is used on The Keep.

Seized brakes and dry seals

Pads bond to discs, shoes bond to drums, and seals that are never warmed dry out and shrink. Scheduled mechanical exercise forms part of The Keep for vehicles stored over longer periods.

The Stable holds the environment, the battery and the cover. The Keep adds the scheduled checks and the engine runs, which is what a car standing for a season actually needs.

10Getting the car here

Round the M25, and why the distance is the point

The building is in Essex, on the other side of the M25 from Surrey. Roughly seventy miles by road, or a little over an hour and a half on a normal day.

The Essex location is deliberate. It provides the space, privacy and controlled environment required for serious vehicle storage while remaining accessible from Surrey and the wider South East.

We serve owners across Weybridge, Esher, Cobham, Oxshott, Virginia Water, Guildford, Godalming, Farnham, Reigate, Epsom and Richmond.

Almost nobody drives it themselves. Collection is arranged from the house, the garage or the specialist, on covered transport for anything that has been standing, and the car comes back the same way when it is wanted.

All visits are by appointment. Nothing on the building says what is inside it and the full address is shared with approved clients only.

11Collection and car care

Recommissioning, servicing and everything after

A classic that has been standing for six months should not simply be handed back with the keys. Fluids, brakes, tyres and fuel all want checking before it goes back on the road.

Recommissioning before collection can be arranged, along with servicing through classic specialists, MOT work, detailing and paint correction, all through one contact.

Covered transport can be booked either way for cars that should not be driven.

Any outside work and costs are agreed with you before the work starts. Full storage rates are published on the car storage prices page.

Preservation
“Small things make perfection, but perfection is no small thing.
— Sir Henry Royce

Batteries sulphate. Tyres flat-spot. Fluids draw water and brakes bind. None of it is dramatic and all of it is expensive.

12Security and privacy

Secure Classic Car Storage Surrey with private access

Proper storage should offer the same level of privacy and care whether the car is financially valuable, historically important or simply important to its owner.

14Classic Car Storage Surrey questions

Classic Car Storage Surrey FAQs

How much does classic car storage cost?

The Stable is £250 plus VAT per month. The Keep is £350 plus VAT per month. Both carry a minimum charge equivalent to three months. The Keep is designed for classics stored for longer periods, where scheduled checks and mechanical exercise are required in addition to storage.

How far is the facility from Surrey?

The building is in Essex, roughly seventy miles from the Weybridge and Cobham area, round the M25 and out on the M11 or A12. Most Surrey owners never make the journey. Collection and delivery are arranged both ways.

What is the difference between storage and just parking it indoors?

Parking indoors keeps the rain off. Storage controls the conditions the car sits in. Humidity is held at fifty five percent, winter temperature at ten to twelve degrees, the battery is on conditioning from day one and the car is under a breathable cover, with condition, mileage, tyre pressures and fluid levels recorded at check in. On The Keep there are scheduled checks and the engine is brought to temperature every sixty days.

What humidity do you hold?

Fifty five percent relative humidity, with winter temperature held around ten to twelve degrees Celsius. Maintaining controlled relative humidity significantly reduces the conditions that encourage condensation and corrosion.

Can you collect a classic from Surrey?

Yes. Collection is arranged from a home, a private garage, a dealer or a specialist anywhere in Surrey. Covered transport can be booked for cars that should not be driven, which includes most cars that have been standing for a season.

What about E10 petrol in an older car?

E10 draws water out of the air and can attack older fuel hoses, cork gaskets, seals and carburettor components. If a car is going to sit, this is worth discussing before check in. Fuel handling is agreed with you as part of the storage plan.

Do you start the engine while the car is stored?

On The Keep, the engine is run up to operating temperature every sixty days and brake binding is checked at the same time. On The Stable the car is kept, monitored and protected, without scheduled running.

Is the battery looked after?

Yes. Every car is on battery conditioning from the day it arrives. On The Keep the conditioner status is checked weekly.

Does my classic need to be running and road legal?

No. A car can be stored without MOT or tax by prior agreement, and non runners can be accepted on covered transport. The car cannot be used on public roads until it is legal to do so.

Does the car need insurance while it is stored?

Yes. The owner keeps full insurance on the car for the whole storage term. Most classic policies include a laid up or storage option, and insurers generally look favourably on a secure indoor site.

Can I visit the car or take it out?

Yes. Access is booked in advance by private appointment. Owners who want to drive in summer and store through winter usually book the return delivery when they book the storage.

Can you get the car ready before I collect it?

Yes. Recommissioning after a long stay, servicing, MOT work, detailing and paint care can all be arranged through one contact and are quoted and agreed before anything is booked.

Is Brooklands or a local specialist a problem for you?

No. Cars are regularly collected from and delivered to specialists rather than homes. If your car is with a Surrey restorer or being prepared for an event, the run can be arranged directly between them and here.
