Do I Need to SORN a Car in Storage?

SORN and car storage often come together, particularly when a vehicle will be kept off the road for winter or placed into long term car storage. The rule itself is simple: a vehicle that is untaxed or uninsured and kept off public roads normally needs a Statutory Off Road Notification.

The important part is understanding what SORN changes, what it does not change and how it affects car storage.

What SORN Means for Car Storage

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It tells the DVLA that a vehicle is being kept off the public road.

A car in storage can be kept in a private garage, on a private driveway, on private land or inside a professional car storage facility. It cannot be kept on a public road while it has a SORN.

Making a SORN is free. Once the declaration is active, the vehicle can remain in private car storage without vehicle tax. Any refund is normally calculated for the full months of tax remaining.

When Is SORN Needed for a Car in Storage?

You need to consider SORN car storage when the vehicle will not remain taxed. You also need a SORN when a vehicle is uninsured, even if the break in cover is brief, unless another legal exemption applies.

You do not have to SORN a car in storage if you keep it taxed and insured. Some owners prefer this because the car may be used regularly or returned to the road at short notice.

For seasonal or long term car storage, SORN can make sense when the vehicle will not be driven for several months. For a car that comes out frequently, keeping it taxed may be more convenient.

Where Can a SORN Vehicle Be Stored?

A SORN vehicle must remain away from public roads. Secure indoor car storage on private premises is suitable because the vehicle is kept entirely on private land.

A public road is not suitable. A public car park may also be unsuitable even when the car is not being driven. The location must genuinely be private and off road.

This is one reason professional car storage can be useful. The vehicle has a defined private place, controlled access and a clear record of when it arrived.

Does SORN Mean the Car Does Not Need Insurance?

A vehicle with a valid SORN does not have to be insured simply to satisfy continuous insurance enforcement. That does not mean an uninsured car storage arrangement is sensible.

A stored car can still be damaged, stolen or affected by fire. Legal permission to stop insurance is not the same as protection against financial loss.

Can You Drive a Car With a SORN?

A SORN vehicle cannot normally be driven on a public road. The main exception is a direct journey to or from a pre-booked MOT or other authorised testing appointment. The vehicle must still be insured for that journey.

Driving from car storage for a casual run, a service appointment or a weekend event is not permitted while the SORN remains active. The car must be taxed and insured before ordinary road use begins again.

How Does a SORN End?

A SORN does not need annual renewal. It continues until the vehicle is taxed again, sold, scrapped or permanently exported.

When the owner wants to take the car out of storage and use it normally, the vehicle needs valid insurance, a valid MOT where required and vehicle tax before it is driven on public roads.

Taxing the vehicle automatically ends the SORN.

SORN Car Storage: The Practical Decision

For winter car storage or long term car storage, SORN can reduce unnecessary vehicle tax while the car remains off the road. It works best when the owner knows the car will not be used unexpectedly.

For a vehicle used every few weeks, keeping it taxed may be easier. For a collector car remaining in secure indoor car storage for an entire season, a SORN may be the cleaner arrangement.
