Car storage insurance is one of those subjects many owners only investigate after the vehicle has already moved. A car can be fully insured for normal use and still need the policy updated when its regular overnight location changes to a professional car storage facility.
The safe approach is simple: tell the insurer where the car will be kept, explain how long it will be in car storage and get the position confirmed in writing.
Tell the Insurer About the Car Storage Location
Motor insurers usually want accurate information about where a vehicle is kept. Moving a car from a home address to secure indoor car storage may change the risk information used by the insurer.
That change does not automatically create a problem. A private car storage building with controlled access may be considered more secure than an exposed driveway. The important point is that the insurer knows the correct location.
Never assume that a car storage address is automatically covered because the policy remains active. Insurance terms differ, and the policyholder is responsible for providing accurate information.
The Facility's Insurance Is Not Your Car Storage Insurance
A professional car storage business may hold insurance for its premises, operations and legal liabilities. That does not automatically replace the owner's own vehicle policy.
The facility's insurance and the owner's car storage insurance do different jobs. The owner's policy is written around the specific vehicle, its declared use and its insured value. The facility's policy protects the business within the terms and limits of its own cover.
This is why professional car storage agreements commonly require the owner to maintain insurance throughout the storage period. Equerry 55 requires full insurance to remain in place for the entire car storage term.
What Is Laid-Up Car Storage Insurance?
Laid-up insurance is designed for vehicles that are off the road and not being used normally. Depending on the policy, it may cover risks such as theft, fire, accidental damage or malicious damage while the vehicle is stored.
Laid-up car storage insurance can be suitable for a classic car, restoration project or seasonal vehicle that has been declared SORN. It usually does not provide ordinary road-use cover.
The exact protection varies between insurers. Owners should check where the vehicle is allowed to be kept, whether professional car storage is accepted, whether transport is included and what security conditions apply.
SORN and Insurance for a Car in Storage
A vehicle with a valid SORN does not legally need motor insurance simply to remain off the road. That is a legal exemption, not a recommendation to leave a valuable car unprotected.
A SORN vehicle in car storage can still be stolen, damaged or destroyed by fire. Many owners therefore keep specialist car storage insurance or laid-up cover in place even though road insurance is not legally required.
At Equerry 55, SORN does not remove the owner's insurance obligation under the storage agreement.
Agreed Value for Classic Car Storage
Standard motor insurance often settles a total-loss claim using market value. That may be difficult for a rare, restored, modified or unusually original car because comparable vehicles can be hard to find.
Agreed-value insurance allows the owner and insurer to agree the insured value in advance, subject to the policy terms. This can be particularly relevant for classic car storage, prestige car storage and collector vehicles whose value is not represented well by an ordinary pricing guide.
The agreed value should be reviewed when the car changes significantly or when the market moves. Restoration work, exceptional provenance and specification can all affect the correct figure.
Transport and Collection Need Separate Attention
A car may be protected while standing inside secure car storage but require different cover while being driven or transported to the facility.
Ask who is responsible during collection and delivery. Check whether covered transport is insured, whether the owner's policy remains active during transit and whether any restrictions apply to loading, unloading or movement by a third party.
Do not assume the car storage policy and the transport policy are the same thing.
Questions to Ask Before Car Storage Begins
Tell the insurer the exact car storage location. Confirm whether the address is accepted. Check whether the car can remain SORN. Confirm the insured value. Ask what protection applies during collection and delivery. Read any security conditions carefully.
Keep the answers in writing. A short email confirming the car storage arrangement is far better than relying on a telephone conversation remembered months later.
The Important Difference
Insurance and secure car storage work together, but they are not interchangeable. Good car storage reduces risks through controlled access, indoor protection and regular care. Insurance deals with the financial consequences when something covered by the policy still goes wrong.
The right arrangement uses both: professional car storage and a vehicle policy that clearly accepts where and how the car is being kept.
